Education & Outreach

earthOCEAN specialize in working with educational institutions, universities, non-profit organizations, community groups and government agencies to create an original suite of effective education and outreach solutions for a variety of needs.

We combine professional multimedia and educational story telling tools to communicate scientific findings and solution-based messages to the public in an accurate and compelling way.

Scientists and conservation groups are faced with a growing challenge in communicating their findings to audiences outside of peer-reviewed journals. More than ever, they are expected by funding bodies and foundations to engage with the public in a way that is compelling and easy to understand through media that the public use, but without the tools or training in proper communication techniques.

Too often, the valuable research findings of scientists are only presented in papers and journals virtually unknown to the general public. Often peer-reviewed science emphasizes conservation implications that need to be communicated to a wide audience, but this rarely occurs.

Science is an effective conduit to awareness and change, but the findings need to be communicated to the public to take effect. Unfortunately, the communication of science in general to a wider audience is often not adequate for change to occur as effectively and expeditiously as it might.

Our challenge is to set the stage for a widespread appreciation of the natural world by creating and implementing an effective model that conveys the findings of scientists directly to the public in a way they can understand and appreciate, and that empowers them to act.

Based on the experiences of experts in their field, we produce educational multimedia solutions that offer an effective tool in heightening public knowledge about science and conservation to local and international audiences.

PBS – VOYAGE OF THE ODYSSEY

Online Educational Series, PBS Television (USA). Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans - 2000-2005.

Voyage of the Odyssey on PBS

The Voyage of the Odyssey was an epic scientific and education expedition over five and a half years studying sperm whales and ocean pollution, led by biologist Dr. Roger Payne.

Chris & Genevieve Johnson lived with researchers in the field producing this award-winning online series using state of the art technologies to share the wonders of science and oceanographic research with the world in near real-time.

earthOCEAN created and led the media and education efforts in 22 countries communicating and increasing ocean literacy on local and international levels. They designed grass roots education programs to increase ocean literacy in local ports the research vessel visited. Over 4,000,000 people have visited the site on PBS and still serves as an online resource today. They spoke to over 30,000 students around the world in 22 countries surveying over 87,000 nautical miles of ocean.
